artist statement
The theme of my work is landscape. I am consumed by awe at the stillness and sometimes overpowering force of nature, which acts as a means to reveal an internal landscape. I am also interested in the interplay between the experience and memory of the natural world and challenged to depict this in paint. The act of painting reinforces that memory and evokes emotions related to it, often revealing conflicting ideas of: intimacy and enormity, familiarity and mystery and emptiness and fullness.

In addition, my creativity embraces the issues of personal identity in a collective society and the importance of quiet contemplation in a culture where alienation and isolation can often prevail. The subject matter echoes what usually passes us by: uneven, weathered wall /stone textures, cracks found in rocks and dry earth, drips revealing the passage of time …

Elements of nineteenth century European northern romantic landscape painting are important to me for example, a search for God in nature and adopting light and darkness as metaphors, whilst I simultaneously take inspiration from modernism, especially the Abstract Expressionists acknowledging the painting as a thing in itself, the importance of the act of making and exploring the tension between abstraction and figuration.

It is my hope that the work could encourage a meditative response and through reflection the spectator may touch upon an experience akin to that which was felt by me whilst making it.
